I do wonder, though - when he says rust, I wonder how bad it is. I suppose there’s no way of knowing until a person actually goes and takes a look at it.

I dunno, looks like a frame off, new motor, a lotta work project to me...

My guess that it has no floors whatsoever. Also note that the fender isn’t dented that is so you can bolt a spare onto the bed.

I think anything of that vintage is going to be a lot of work. I’d have no trouble paying double if it were less rusty.

You mean it is dented, right? When I first saw that on another truck, I was curious to know why it was, but then I saw one with a spare bolted on, and it made perfect sense.

Doesn’t look that bad really.

No visible holes in the pictures and is original.

The floorboards and bed are probably gone, but that’s nice flat sheetmetal that can be patched easily.

Pro-tip: Get old gas tanks from junk yards to cut up into floorpans — they give them away and are a decently thick gauge. If you put carpet or rubber mats down, no one will know that it’s an old gas tank either.

Looks a bit rotten, but pretty rare with the 6-window cab right?

:P I made a bit of a literary mistake yesterday - I meant to say “Thanks to Oppo...” but said “No thanks to Oppo...”. Just a bit of a difference. :P

If anything from Craigslist is to be believed, they’re the rarest of rare things. Every time I see one posted it’s always “Rare!!!1!! *** Five Window GM You’ll never see another like it!”.

It does look like there might be one hole through the side of the box between the cab and rear fender.

I was actually wondering where a person could get sheet metal for making body repairs. That gas tank thing sounds like a pretty slick idea. Just make sure to completely flush/fill the gas tank with water prior to cutting it apart, right? :P

Honestly, if I was going to get a truck like this, I’d want to keep it rough looking and functional.

I seem to see them pretty regularly out here, even ‘57 Cameos, but rust isn’t nearly as much of an issue so there’s probably a disproportionate number concentrated on the west coast. If you have nothing but time and a welder it could be a good project. Worth at least a look, I’d say.

Well, I have been meaning to learn to weld. I’ve had a lesson or two, but this would definitely be a good reason to actually buy one and do something with it!

Also, I think such a truck would be pretty awesome for Home Depot runs, and things of that nature.

If it’s mostly flat, you can use Home Depot sheet metal with little bending.

I bent and cut some sheet metal to make my own patch panels using tin snips and a hand former. Can’t really recommend this route, but it can be done.

Of course, you could do it the easy way and buy reproduction panels.

In the US, junk yards are required to remove and flush the tanks by law (at least around where I live). Of course, it can’t hurt to clean it again for safety’s sake.

Among other things, I’ve been thinking about engines lately. I wonder if anyone makes a rebuild kit for a straight-six like the one that is likely in this truck. If not, how hard is it to get an older small block Chevy and rebuild it?

I’m sure there are tons of people who make rebuild kits for anything GM or Ford. No idea how hard it would be but it might be easier to pull a motor from a vehicle that ran at a junkyard.

One thing I’d definitely need to learn more about is which engines can be mated up to which transmissions without too much difficulty. That, and there seems to be a ton of different variations of the small block Chevy.

I was doing some digging around the other day and came across this:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/lincoln…

Might be hard to find one, though.

EDIT: That FrePower one looks like it might be an older model. Not that that matters too much.

Jesus, welding on wood, no gloves, pets walking around.

But it looks like it does an ok job, not that I am a welder.

I like how someone here on Oppo the other day described flux-core as something like splatter-core. After watching a series on TIG welding aluminum, almost everything else looks so messy.

I suppose I shouldn’t rag on it too hard. I’ve only ever done stick, MIG, and TIG. I really want to get more practice with the latter two.

I have TIG, MIG, and Oxy Acetylene. Only TIG or MIG once though. I’m bad at it but it is something I wish I could get better at.

Hah, no worries. I’ve been meaning to get out to Taber and get a few more lessons from my uncle out there. I’ve also got some cousins out towards Glenwood that would be willing to teach me a few things.
